Was Iago a Mistake? - Emma Barron
So, was it really wrong to include Iago as the sidekick to Jafar? This analysis considers his characterization as a malevolent counterpart to the Genie of the Lamp. After all, the portly parrot provides a rather humorous contrast to the darker, brooding magician who threatens the existence of Agrabah. And yet, the two share some irrefutable bond that might provide some justification. It might be hard to understand what Jafar may be planning or thinking at any moment, given that he is oft silent, composed, and calculating. Yet Iago conveys the very voice of this villainous vizier - an ultimate necessity to the plot of the movie. In any case, we give our verdict! |
Self Determination in Aladdin - Celina Huang
How important is it to be the master of one's own destiny? Parents and teachers can draw from characters in Aladdin to instruct younger viewers in this matter - and here, we do just that. Aladdin, Jasmine, and the Genie of the Lamp - these are three characters who provide discrete perspectives on the idea of self determination. We further contextualize this exploration on identity by considering the modern analog to the setting of the film - Iraq and Saudi Arabian society, in which class distinctions may inhibit self-expression. We leave you to be the judge of this debate. What do you think? |

"Hit the Road, Aladdie Buck" - Samuel Peasah
It's at last time we tackled Aladdin's morality head on. We realize this might sound like a brooding, philosophical discussion. And we can assure you, after hours of looking at ourselves while video editing, that it is not - it's the opposite, almost to an unfortunate extent. But we explore the narrative shortcomings and ethical questions brought up by the wishing system of the Lamp - painting not so pretty a picture of our street hero, Aladdin, in the process. But before fans become too turned off by this, we offer a solution to promote deeper discussion. Aladdin has the capacity to teach vital lessons in honesty, integrity, and wisdom. And thus we explore what could have been. |
